This is WAR: Spiritual Warfare

Every day, we face challenges and obstacles. Every day is a new adventure. And every day, we are in the presence of spiritual warfare. But what does that even mean? I think that many believers have a really hard time seeing and accepting the truth in this matter. Is it really a “spiritual battle?” And if so, does it really involve me and you right here in our own homes, work environments and churches? Or does it only involve missionaries in third world countries? Some of us try to answer that question by saying, “I am not in the missions field really, so I probably don’t have to worry about that,” or “I am just a stay at home mom, and the only people I see all day are my children and spouse. This probably does not apply to me.” Not true my friends! In Ephesians 6, Paul addresses MANY different people: children, parents, servants and masters. He instructs every one of us to put on our spiritual armor. Why? Because we ARE part of this war, not against man, but against Satan and his angels.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we ARE missionaries! Our mission is to preach the gospel and to show the love of God. Stay at home mommies, that includes you! You may not be able to travel the world to teach God’s word, but you have your own ministry right in your own home… Your family! When you are bringing up your children, you are really raising future warriors for Christ! Take that seriously, because you know Satan does. He will do whatever he can to make you snap at your child in anger, or to make you feel incapable of “accurately” teaching your children about Jesus. He may even make you feel incapable of praying with your children. When you talk about Jesus to your children and pray with them, you are preparing them for battle! Proverbs 22:6 states “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” You are guiding them to make the most important decision of their lives: accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. What could be more important than your family’s salvation? Ladies, your ministry also includes being your husband’s life and spiritual partner. Believe me when I say that we women have the ability to destroy our man’s dreams and crush their happiness with our words… I have been guilty of that at times, and that is not something I am proud of. Satan will do whatever it takes to bring your family down, so it is time to start protecting yourselves.

in-his-presences-dolores-develdeI love how this picture by Dolores De Velde depicts us (the bride of Christ) as warriors. There is so much symbolism in this piece.

Maybe you know all of this already, but do you truly believe it? Do you truly believe that there are spirits who want to bring you down in the name of hate? If so, when was the last time you called them out? When was the last time you cast away demons in the name of Jesus? When was the last time you acknowledged them for what they were? If your answer is “no” or “never” to any of these questions, you are not alone, but it is time for that to change.

Did you know you have the power to throw evil spirits out? Did you know that through Jesus, you have the power to annihilate Satan’s plans for your and your family’s destruction? In Mark 6:7, Jesus gives his disciples “authority over evil spirits.” We are his disciples, my friends, and God has given us the ability to call out evil spirits. His Holy Spirit is what is living inside of you right now if you are a believer in Christ! He is the one commanding those demons when you rebuke them in the name of Jesus. Do not limit the power of the Holy Spirit.

Satan is real, and he wants to take down every last one of God’s children. And if he cannot strip them of their salvation, he will do his best to strip them of their happiness here on earth.  Even more than that, he wants to do his best to pollute our reputations and testimonies as well as our relationships with Christ in order to discourage us and/or “discredit” us as credible witnesses.  How will Satan attempt that? By sending his followers to entice us to stumble in our everyday lives. Satan is smart, and he knows how to study his enemy in order to bring them down… Whether it be with depression, anger, lust, or pride, he will do his best to make you stumble. I am not saying that every time you are angry or have bad thoughts that there is a demon taunting you.  It may be the desires of your own flesh that you are fighting (Galatians 5:19-21).  I am telling you that you need to be aware that demons are REAL, and they are all for watching you give into the desires of the flesh. So if they can provide that extra push, they will.  The Bible reminds us that Satan roams the earth like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. He and his followers are real, and their presence is not something to be taken lightly, nor are they to be ignored.

I hope that after reading this post you will start taking a look at at certain situations from a spiritual view point. For example, the next time you notice that there is a general feeling of depression in your home that you just can’t shake, believe that you and your family are under attack. If you are feeling overwhelmed with lustful thoughts, and no matter how hard you try they will not go away, you are under attack. If you are just generally agitated at everything your children or spouse say and do, you are under attack.  Demons are real, and we need to acknowledge that they exist and meddle in our daily lives. Denying their presence will not make them go away. In fact, it will attract them all the more!  Pray that God opens your eyes to see the battlefield clearly, and pray daily that he will arm you with His Spiritual Armor.  One more thing… do not be afraid to use your divine weapon: the Word of God. The Bible!

For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
